How to Bleed Shimano Bicycle Brakes Using a Brake Bleed Kit

Bleeding your Shimano bicycle brakes ensures optimal performance and safety. Follow these simple instructions to bleed your brakes using a brake bleed kit.

Shimano brake bleed kit (with bleed cup and funnel)
Mineral oil brake fluid
Syringe
Bleed block or spacer
5 mm Allen key

Steps to Bleed Shimano Brakes

Prepare the bike: Mount your bike securely on a stand. Remove the wheel and insert a bleed block or spacer between the brake pads.
Set up the brake lever: Use the 5 mm Allen key to level the brake lever. Make sure it is flat and parallel to the ground.
Attach the bleed cup: Screw the bleed cup or funnel from your kit onto the brake lever’s bleed port. Ensure it is secure.
Fill the bleed cup: Pour a small amount of mineral oil brake fluid into the bleed cup, but don't overfill it.

Clean up: Wipe away any excess brake fluid. Reinstall the wheel and check the brake feel to ensure it is firm and responsive.
