What are Moka Pots?

A moka pot is a stove-top coffee maker that brews coffee by passing boiling water pressurized by steam through ground coffee. It is named after the Yemeni city of Mocha, from which coffee beans were originally imported to Italy. The moka pot was invented by Alfonso Bialetti in 1933 and has since become one of the most popular methods of making coffee in Italy and around the world.

Moka pots are typically made of aluminum, but they can also be made of stainless steel or other materials. They come in a variety of sizes, from small stovetop models that make one or two cups of coffee to larger models that can make up to 12 cups.

To use a moka pot, first fill the bottom chamber with cold water to just below the valve. Then, add ground coffee to the filter basket. The amount of coffee you use will depend on the size of your moka pot and how strong you like your coffee. A good rule of thumb is to use 2 tablespoons of coffee for every cup of water.

Once the water and coffee are added, screw the top section of the moka pot on tightly. Place the moka pot on a stovetop over medium heat. As the water heats up, it will be pressurized by steam. This pressure will force the water up through the coffee grounds and into the top chamber.

The coffee will start to brew after a few minutes. Once the coffee has stopped dripping, remove the moka pot from the heat. Be careful, as the coffee will be very hot. Pour yourself a cup and enjoy!
